What are the perks of being a high school English teacher versus a college literature professor?

I’m an English major who will soon graduate with an undergraduate degree. I am debating whether to go on and get my PhD in English literature or a Masters in education. What are the perks/downfalls of each profession? I am also an avid horseback rider and would like the funds and the time to pursue my interests. Thank you!

Do my grades indicate that I am good enough to do a phd in literature?

I have a 2:1 undergrad and I am currently studying for an MA - I just got my first 2 essays back and I have merits on both. I know it’s early days yet and it is possible for me to still get a distinction, but I think this might be an indication of what level I am at, as I tried really really hard! I know I can do a phd with these grades, but if I’m not getting a distinction in my preferred subject (which one essay was on) doesn’t that indicate that I might not have what it takes?
MoneyMatt - I totally agree, but my question to you would then be are MA essays a good indication of whether I am cut out for this kind of study? In other words, If I’m only getting average grades at MA level, do I really have the logical-thinking skills to be able to come up with an outstanding and original piece of research?
What can I do with a PhD from Harvard in Italian literature?

I don’t want to teach or be in academia. I have experience in publishing (hated it), PR, finance, tourism (loved ‘em). I like to think outside the box, take risks, be creative. I also don’t want to live in poverty. Is there any there hope, or should I just start applying for teaching jobs next fall?
what is the job market at the moment for english professor?

I am a freshman english major and I am very interested in going on for my PhD in english literature and teaching at a university/college. But, I am concerned about the things that i am hearing from a variety of sources stating that universities don’t really hire english professors anymore, and that the only jobs that they do really offer them are part-time, non-tenured positions. I was wondering if you guys would be willing to let me in on what exactly the stasis is in regards to job opportunities and salaries for english professors because from what I’m hearing, I may need to think of something else.
