What do you look for in a math curriculum?

When looking at curricula for K-2 math, what kinds of things do you look for?
Do you like one that is more hands-on or more workbook and drill oriented?
Do you ever use literature in your math programs?
Any advice for building curriculum for a Christian home school family?

My wife will be home schooling our 4 children.
2 are old enough to begin this year.
She had her heart set on Son Light curriculum, which teaches primarily through literature and the Bible, but financially it’s currently out of the question.
Can anyone give detailed advice on how to build our own curriculum along the same lines on a tight budget?
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
What is the best curriculum to learn literature (technical terms, etc.)? How can I get this curriculum?

Also, if no “perfect” curriculum is available, are there any classes that I, a homeschooler, may take?
I am looking for a good high school literature program–any recommendations?

My daughter will be 14–last year she completed Starting Points–which is a beginning world view curriculum. I loved it because she read really good literature and also did alot of writing. I am considering Lightening LIt by Hewitt Publishing. any help would be appreciated.
